  • Dr. Jeff Okeson, is a 1972 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. After graduation, he completed two years with the Public Health Service in a rotating dental internship and directing an outpatient clinic. He then joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1974. His current roles at UK are professor in the dental school, chairman of the Department of Oral Health Science and Director of their Orofacial Pain Program, which he established in 1977. This is a unique program which represents a multidisciplinary effort in the management of chronic orofacial pain problems.

    Dr. Okeson has authored more than 220 publications in the area of occlusion, temporomandibular disorders, and orofacial pain in both national and international journals. He is considered one of the most preeminent authorities on the subject of TMD and orofacial pain, having presented more than 1000 invited lectures on these subjects throughout the entire United States, as well as over fifty different countries.

    Dr. Okeson has also received numerous awards recognizing his many achievements in dentistry throughout the years. Most notable is the International Dentist of the Year Award from the Academy of Dentistry International. This is their highest honor and was given to him in appreciation of his worldwide efforts in providing education in the areas of TMD and orofacial pain. Other awards received are the American Academy of Orofacial Pain's Service Award, as well as several from the University of Kentucky, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Dentistry, the Provost's Distinguished Service of Professorship, and the Great Teacher Award voted on by the entire campus.

    Session Description:
    Some toothaches do not respond to endodontic procedures and even extraction of the painful tooth. This course will discuss how this can happen and how to manage the pain. Seven different types of non-odontogenic toothaches will be presented and how each can best be differentially diagnosed and managed. Understanding these concepts is essential in a dental practice.
    Learning Objectives:
    • Learn the mechanisms that are reasonable for non-odontogenic toothache.
    • Learn to differentiate a variety of non-odontogenic toothaches by their unique clinical characteristics.
    • Learn the management considerations for seven non-odontogenic toothaches.

    2:00 PM – 4:30 PM - Clinical Management of TMD

    Session Description:
    The management of TMD can be quite challenging. Dr. Okeson will present the latest scientific findings and explain how to select the correct treatment options for your patient. He will discuss the management of both muscle and intracapsular disorders and the use of occlusal appliances. He will place special emphasis on knowing when occlusal changes are indicated and when they are not.

    • Learn the nature course of intracapsular disorders.
    • Understand why an occlusal appliance may help your patient.
  • Ms. Debra Engelhardt-Nash has been in dentistry over 25 years. She is a trainer, author, and presenter. Debra has presented workshops nationally and internationally for numerous study groups and organizations. She is a repeat presenter for the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting.

    Debra was a contributing editor for "Contemporary Esthetics and Restorative Practice" magazine, "Contemporary Dental Assistant" magazine and has written for a number of dental publications. She has been honored twice as author of the year for her contributions to dental journals. She was also an instructor for the Central Piedmont Community College Dental Assisting Program and a guest instructor for Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. Debra trains healthcare teams in customer service and practice development. In addition to working in the healthcare industry, Debra has done customer service training for Nordstrom Department Stores in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. She also trains service industry leaders in hiring and training protocols.

    Debra is a founding member and served two terms as President of the National Academy of Dental Management Consultants, where she currently serves as member at large. She is an active member of the American Dental Assistants Association and serves on the Board of the American Dental Assistants Association Foundation. Debra is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Practice Administration and a fellow in the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics.

    Because of her contributions to the industry of dentistry, Debra received the Kay Moser Distinguished Service Award given by the American Dental Assistants Association in 2008. It is their highest honor.

    The demands of today's practice require office protocols and team behaviors that are not only efficient but also effective. This program will cover what it takes to be a highly productive practice and effective dental team. Learn practical steps to enrich the work environment, and the patient experience. Steps will include internal marketing strategies to attract and retain patients.
