Patrick J. Sammon, Ph.D. is a professor emeritus, Department of Oral Health Science, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and has a joint appointment with the Department of Physiology, University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He has served with the Advisory Committee on Chemical Dependency Issues, Council on Dental Practice for the American Dental Association and was a consultant and trainer for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Medical Specialty Program. He is also an instructor for the Counter Drug Task Force Training Programs in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Sammon currently teaches health professionals, law enforcement, and educational organizations continuing education courses dealing with alcohol and other drug misuse, abuse and addiction at the local, state, national and international levels.

Session: Prescription Drug Abuse & Meth Mouth: What’s Cooking in Your Office
Credit Hours: 3 hours
Session Description: Drug abuse is a major problem affecting dental practice as well as our families. The illegal use of prescription drugs, meth abuse, and meth mouth in teens all impact dental practice. Learn about the rampant illicit use of painkillers, internet drug trafficking, dangers of cough medicine abuse in children, doctor/shopper cons, the meth abuse trends, and what we can do about it. Dental teams can play a huge role in drug abuse identification, prevention and treatment. Learn how to prevent initial drug use, recognize early signs and symptoms of use, give prevention messages/brief interventions, identify patients abusing drugs, and refer patients with drug problems.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Describe how drug abuse can lead to addiction and drug seeking behavior.
- Recognize the clinical problems associated with narcotic and OTC drug abuse.
- Describe meth users’ behaviors, drug effects and etiology of meth mouth.
Mary Fuller Everhart received her BA in Criminal Justice from St. Leo University in 1987. Ms. Everhart is employed as the Training and Development Director for Mandatory Reporting at the Children’s Law Center, University of South Carolina School of Law.
Ms. Everhart has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement. She began her career with the Sumter Police Department and was later employed by The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a senior instructor. While employed at SCCJA, Ms. Everhart served on the Child Fatality Review Committee. She was a founding member of the South Carolina Juvenile Officers’ Association and served as an advisor on the National School Safety Board. Most recently she was employed with The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division as a Special Agent assigned to the Pee Dee Region. She was assigned the child fatality portion of the Susan Smith case and was also assigned to the Citadel hazing case. While employed with SLED, Ms. Everhart investigated 287 child deaths. Ms. Everhart retired from SLED in 2001. Ms. Everhart has interviewed in excess of 900 children. She has qualified as an expert witness in both General Sessions Court and Family Court.
Ms. Everhart has taught for Public Agency Training Council for the past six (6) years.
She has taught extensively around the United States on the topic of interviewing children and on mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect. She also taught the Royal Bahamian Police in 2002.
Session: Recognizing and Reporting Abuse and Neglect - You and the Law
Credit Hours: 3 hours
Session Description: Mandated Reporters are required to make reports of suspected child abuse and neglect. There is sometimes a question about what the law actually requires. In this training we will examine the legal requirements for mandated reporting. We will also explore how these laws apply to you. Part of knowing when to report is understanding the indicators of abuse and neglect. We will discuss some of the indicators and look at some actual cases. We will look at how the system responds and what services are available to help with the investigation.
Kelly W. Jones, Pharm.D, BCPS is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine. He is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he received both his B.S. in Pharmacy and Pharm.D. He also completed a Pharm.D. Fellowship in Family Medicine from MUSC. He has been with McLeod Family Medicine Residency Program since his graduation in 1989.
Session: Pharmacotherapy Review for Dentists: a Focus on Antibiotics and Narcotics
Credit Hours: 3 hours
Session Description: The purpose of this presentation is to provide a comprehensive review on antibiotics and acute pain medications often prescribed by the dentist. During this review, any new antibiotics, or any new medications for pain, that were recently approved by the FDA will be discussed.
Objectives:
- Discuss the various classes of narcotics and the clinical pearls associated
with each drug. - Describe an oral pain ladder based on efficacy and narcotic potential.
- Review side effects of each drug and describe ways the practitioner can
aid in reducing these side effects. - Discuss common antibiotics used in dentistry, their efficacy, safety and cost.
- Discuss the “bugs and drugs” method for selecting an empiric antibiotic for
any given infection in dentistry. - Discuss the side effect and drug interaction profile for all medications discussed.

Friday's Speakers
Calvin Wilson, an American Heart Association certified BLS Healthcare Provider Instructor for more than 16 years, will present a Life Support Healthcare Provider course (recertification in the AM and certification in the PM) at the 2009 annual meeting in Myrtle Beach. Calvin and a staff of certified instructors will emphasize skills for helping victims of all ages.
Session: CPR Certification & CPR Recertification - $60 per registrant
Credit Hours: 4 hours for each session

Both the recertification and basic certification programs are ticketed sessions with 35 spaces available for each course. Individuals completing these sessions will be officially certified as a BLS provider. CDT, professional credits and CEU’s will be awarded.

Dr. Turbyfill graduated from the University of Louisville in 1959. He studied with Dr. Earl Pound for many years and this relationship is responsible for his keen interest in prosthodontics. Dr. Turbyfill maintains a private practice in West Columbia, South Carolina. He teaches dentists the principle of complete dentures and partials in demonstration and lecture seminars.
Session: Removable Prosthodontics – Increased Demand in the Modern World
Credit Hours: 4 hours for each session
Session Description:
- A unique method for providing complete denture service for the demanding patient will be discussed.
- The use of the completed diagnostic denture for surgical and prosthetic planning of implant supported prosthetics will be explored.
- The mandibular free end saddle partial denture that is functional and esthetic is a lost art.
- The fact that porcelain denture teeth are best for long tern health of the tissues will be shown. The use of custom cast occlusal surfaces will be demonstrated.
Harald O. Heymann, D.D.S., M.Ed. graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He is the past Chairman of the Department of Operative Dentistry and currently is Professor and Director of Graduate Operative Dentistry at the UNC School of Dentistry.
Dr. Heymann is particularly active in the clinical research of esthetic restorative materials and participates in a dental practice devoted largely to esthetic dentistry.
He is a member of Academy of Operative Dentistry, the International Association of Dental Research, and is Past-President and a Fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He is also a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Academy of Dental Materials. He also serves as a consultant to the ADA.
The author of more than 180 scientific publications, Dr. Heymann also has authored a number of textbook chapters on conservative esthetic techniques and is Co-Editor of The Art and Science of Operative Dentistry. Dr. Heymann is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Heymann has given more than 1,000 lectures on various aspects of esthetic dentistry worldwide, is a Board Member of the CRA Foundation, and has received the Gordon J. Christensen Award for excellence as a CE speaker.

Stacy McCauley, RDH, MS - Manager, Professional Education and e-Learning is a graduate of Kellogg Community College with 16 years of clinical practice experience. After completing her Bachelor of Science Degree at Siena Heights College in Adrian, Michigan she relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to obtain her Master of Science degree in Dental Hygiene Education. She is a former clinical assistant professor at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, has published research in various dental hygiene journals, and has conducted clinical research. She currently serves on the editorial review board for Modern Hygienist magazine and the Journal of Dental Hygiene, and is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and North Carolina Dental Hygienists’ Association. Stacy is the Manager of Professional Education and e-Learning for Philips Sonicare in the Carolinas.
Session: Teenagers - What Their Mouths are Telling You but They’re Not: Practical Information on Teen Health Issues
Credit Hours: 3 hours
Session Description: The current and sometimes shocking health behaviors and trends in the younger generation can influence their oral and systemic health. The dental professional has an opportunity during the dental visit to identify risk behaviors and intervene with the teenager to make positive health choices.
Participants will engage in a lively discussion on timely topics relating to teens. Dialogue may include oral and overall health issues associated with cola/sports drink consumption, eating disorders, obesity and substance abuse (Meth Mouth). Examining high risk behaviors and gender differences prepare the dental professional to initiate conversations that will provide guidance with the health decisions that face the youth of today.

- Understand current trends in teen nutrition.
- Assess and modify various risk behaviors impacting oral health.
- Evaluate and modify various risk behaviors impacting overall health.

Session: Customized Care for Healthy Patients and a Healthy Practice

Alessandro Cuchiaroowned and operated his own lab in Italy for 25 years, 1986-Present. He is heavily focused on teaching restorative & implant dentistry to dental technicians worldwide. Trained and experienced in all phases of ‘ceramics and crown and bridge” including all ceramics, Zirconia and full arch rehabilitation.
Alessandro is incredibly experienced in Zirconia crown and full arch restorations fabrication for anteriors and posteriors. Has fabricated over 3000 Zirconia restorations and well versed in the full range of restorations used for abutment & implant level cases. Has placed more Zirkonzahn full arch restorations and implant bridges (milled frame) than anyone in the USA. Experienced in custom abutments both TI and ZR. Alessandro is currently the “General Manager” of Zirkonzahn USA. He maintains a fully equipped Zirkonzahn Zirconia training center with a full time support staff, and currently conducts a variety of half day, one day and two day seminars 36 weeks per year on various restorative and implant subjects. Achieved a Certified Master Dental Technician status in the past 12 years, 1997-2009.
Session: Full Contour Zirconia Fabrication on Implant & Abutment Level Restorations
Credit Hours: 2 hours
Session Description: Zirconium dioxide has proven itself as a very reliable and a very trendy material for the production of all types of dental restorations. Sandy will discuss the ABC’s of Zirconia and will introduce the “Prettau” Bridge which is a new full contour milled Zirconia restoration with high translucency that is used for both abutment level and implant level cases of any size.
He will also discuss the Zirkonzahn Manual Milling system. This method of producing Zirconia copings, from single units to full arch bridges as well as screw retained bridges, is easy to use and highly affordable for all sized dental laboratories and specialty dental practices.
Stuart Jonesbrings over 4 years of dental industry experience to his position as 3M ESPE’s Lava COS (Chair-side Oral Scanner) Specialist. He joined OMNII Oral Pharmaceuticals in 2004 which was then acquired by 3M ESPE. During his tenure with 3M ESPE, Stuart has held positions as Preventive Care Consultant, Dental Practice Specialist, and now Lava COS Specialist. These positions gave him the opportunity to work with dental offices in reviewing and updating their hygiene treatment protocols, providing knowledge on new materials, treatment options, and materials/ medicaments to meet customer’s needs. He assisted with North Carolina Dental Offices implementing programs that would increase patient compliance for dental offices, worked closely with these offices on their preventive and restorative needs. Stuart’s training and education incorporates many dental product materials including impressioning materials, composites, adhesives, temporization, cements, and preventive medications. His work has given him the opportunity to discuss all dental procedures with offices and ways to enhance them. Training and education progressed for him to digital impressioning and the new technology offerings.
Stuart’s current position focuses on educating, presenting and implementing Lava COS into dental offices. He chose this direction because of it being on the cutting edge of changes within dentistry. Many dental advisors and experts predict this technology progression for impression taking and working with labs digitally in this arena will be the standard for fabrication of prosthondontics within the next five years. The Lava COS has many benefits and allows Dental Offices to maintain their Lab relationships and fabricate precise restorations.
His area of coverage includes West Virginia, Central Virginia, North Carolina, the coast of South Carolina and Savannah, GA. He graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and a Minor in Business. Previous to working for OMNI and now 3M ESPE, Stuart was a Preventive Consultant for the State of North Carolina. Stuart presented to large groups on safety and compliance of fire and injury prevention. Stuart currently resides in Raleigh, NC with his wife Katie and son Brayden.

Rebekah Steenis the South Carolina Executive Director for DentaQuest. DentaQuest was selected as Dental Administrative Service Organization (ASO) by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) in June of 2009 and began serving the state Medicaid program in this capacity April 1. DentaQuest is primarily responsible for dental claims adjudication and utilization management, but also supports the SCDHHS dental program through provider and member services, including outreach and education. Steen is a recipient of undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. Prior to being named South Carolina Executive Director, she served DentaQuest as a consultant in business development and govern ment relations
Session: Updates to the South Carolina Medicaid Dental Program
Session Description: This session will detail changes to the operation of the SCDHHS Medicaid dental program and review administrative processes for existing providers and those considering enrollment.
Charlie Hook, DMD, was a former professor of operative and general dentistry and associate dean for clinical affairs at MUSC’s College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Hook currently serves as associate pastor at First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant. Prior to joining the MUSC faculty, Dr. Hook worked in private practice in Newberry and served for four years as a dental missionary in Barbados. Dr. Hook’s lecture style entertains the audience by combining humor and experience with his knowledge of the subject.

Credit Hours: 3 hours
Session Description:This course is designed to meet the annual OSHA (bloodborne pathogens) training requirements for all employees of the dental office. The seminar will address the most recent updates and forms necessary to be compliant with OSHA regulations including:
- Infection Control Protocols (incoming casework, outgoing casework, equipment such as buffing rags/wheels, pumice) *
- Hazard Communication Program (HMIS stickers, PPE) *
- OSHA notification procedures (multiple hospitalizations or any fatality) *
- First Aid/CPR training and equipment
- Emergency Plans (fire, inclement weather, evacuation, notification of family, emergency communications)
- Lock/Tag-Out Procedures for equipment servicing
- Ergonomics (workbench especially)
Participants will also gain knowledge of what should be done “When Your Office is called by an OSHA Inspector,” as well as insight concerning violations that have resulted in OSHA fines. Each office will receive a complimentary Exposure Control Plan (a mandatory requirement) that can be easily customized to meet the needs of the individual office. A certificate of OSHA training will be issues for each participant.
A $25 ticket is required and all proceeds are donated to MUSC’s James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine building fund.
Bruce L. Cassis, DDS, MAGD, MWCLI, is a 1980 graduate of West Virginia University School of Dentistry. Dr. Cassis maintains a dental practice in Fayetteville, West Virginia. He is an adjunct professor at West Virginia University School of Dentistry and sits on the Dental School Board of Advisors Council. He is a field faculty member for the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnership., hosting dental and dental hygiene students for a 6 week rotation and precepting for allied health professional students.
Dr. Cassis is a clinical instructor for certification level training utilizing the WaterlaseMD Er, Cr: YSGG laser and diode wavelength systems. He has successfully trained hundreds of dentists in implementing laser procedures into their practices. Dr. Cassis earned his Mastership Certification from the World Clinical Laser Institute in January of 2005 and from the Academy of General Dentistry in June of 2007. He has served on the Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) Council for the Academy of General Dentistry since 2005. He contributed to research conducted by Shareef Madavi, of SM2 Consulting, and the publication, “Case Studies on Waterlase in Today’s Dental Practice, Investing in Your Patients and Your Practice”. The article is a stand-alone publication and was also featured in the February 2006 edition of Dental Economics. Most recently, he has helped in the development and clinical testing of the WaterlaseMD turbo laser high-speed hand piece system introduced at the 2009 Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting.

Session Description:With a changing technological society, we have the goal to increase production while conserving time. We must give attention to the tools that help us accomplish this goal. The dental laser is definitely a product that can help achieve this goal.
Dr. Cassis will present a general review of the history of lasers, the physics behind laser dentistry, and review some of the lasers available to general dentists. He will discuss how you can successfully incorporate a laser into your dental practice. He will show how he effectively uses his laser daily in a wide variety of procedures.
Pat Taylor, CDT, has been a part of the dental profession for over 39 years and is certified in both crown & bridge and ceramics. Prior to his technical services and sales career, Pat gained experience as both a manager / partner in a larger commercial lab and also owned a smaller specialty lab for a while. He has presented continuing education programs throughout North America and Europe. Pat has been with Ivoclar Vivadent Inc. for over 28 years and is presently the Technical Sales Manager for the eastern half of the United States.

Matthew Hopfensperger, DMD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. Dr. Hopfensperger joined the faculty in 1998 and is the Director of the extensive UNC Predoctoral Dental Implant Program and recently initiated the elective UNC Predoctoral Implant Surgery Course. He received his DDS degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1986. The following year he attended the GPR Program at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. After gaining additional private practice experience, he returned to the University of Michigan and received a MS degree in Prosthodontics in 1991. Upon graduation, he served on the faculty of the University of Western Australia from 1992 to 1993.
In conjunction with his wife Dr. Sian Kwa (who is also a Prosthodontist), Dr. Hopfensperger founded the first specialty practice of the Netherlands, which they operated together for five years until 1998. Dr. Hopfensperger maintains an active practice in the UNC Dental Faculty Practice, which focuses on advanced restorative and implant dentistry. “Dr. Hop” has extensive restorative and surgical experience with multiple dental implant systems and provides a unique perspective to implant dentistry.
Session: The Essentials of Restoratively Driven Esthetic Implant Dentistry
Credit Hours: 3 hours
Session Description:With the advances and evolution occurring in implant dentistry, it is imperative that we provide the most esthetic restorative and surgical option for our patients. There are a multitude of dental implant systems available to the surgeon and restorative dentist, each with its own advantages. We must be able to rationally evaluate these systems to logically justify their use in a specific case.
This program is designed for the experienced as well as the emerging implant dentist. There will be an overview of treatment planning parameters and a review of surgical protocols, including site preservation, immediate placement and augmentation. The proper utilization of immediate provisionalization and loading will be addressed. The emphasis of this program will be on understanding the advantages of dental implant systems and restorative options available.
Implant dentistry is now, more than ever a Team Approach. The synergy of the restorative dentist, surgeon and dental laboratory is of utmost importance. Please invite your lab partner to this meeting.
